Undersea cables are widely used for transmitting telephone and internet traffic. The first cable was laid in 1858 and is still being used today. However, the life expectancy of an undersea cable is 25 years with little or no maintenance. This depends on factors such as age, weather, ship anchoring, fishing threats, etc. In the case of damage, the damaged section can alone be replaced without having to replace the whole system in some cases.
